Things are happening. The only thing that’s not really happening is a warm sunny season. And I thought São Paulo had crazy weather… C’mon, Toronto, SNOW in mid-April? And those crazy 40kph winds? I WANT TO SEE FLOWERS BLOOMING AND BIRDS SINGING!
of such a horrible thing

No, I didn’t buy it. I hate bagpipes.
These end-of-winter days are the most disgusting (I love that word) days ever. It’s still cold, and it’s the beginning of the rainy season, so it’s foggy, windy and MOIST outside. The temperature starts to raise above zero, so you have this horrible combination of snow-rain, the so-called SNAIN.
The problem with humidity and windy days is that you feel way colder (that’s why they call it “windchill”) than it actually is. Although I enjoyed the true winter days, including the BLIZZARDS, these not-so-winter days really suck and I can’t wait for spring, so I can ride my bike again. I feel sorry for the poor bikes left on the ice out there. They must feel so abandoned.
I have a new house. I have a new job. I have a new year. I’m also experiencing real winter for the first time, and, to be pretty honest, it’s not that bad. You just become a bit lazy because you have to wear all these layers, like Photoshop, and snow boots, but you kind of get used to it.
You might have seen me complaining about crazy snow showers and the cold, but to be even more honest, I think it’s cute and I like to go out in the snow and I become sort of disappointed when the showers end. Like “meh, it’s not snowing anymore”. I can hear in my head the Waltz of The Snowflakes (yeah, I went to the Four Seasons to see the Nutcracker and cried like a baby) during a heavy snowfall.
Of course, I’m in Toronto and the cold here is not THAT cold and the snowfall here is not that heavy. I’d probably be utterly bored and horrified if I were living in Yellowknife.
Oh yeah, you might be curious about the new place. When we moved here, we didn’t have jobs or anything, so we moved to a junior one bedroom. Now that things are going well, we decided to move to a big fat 2 bedroom. Because, you, know, we need space.
It’s been seven and a half months since my arrival here, and by no means I feel homesick. Probably because I feel more like at home now than I’ve ever felt before.
After the temp job at TIFF I moved to a full-time position at an IT Company, more like me. I also decided to take the yoga thing more seriously and I’m doing the first part of the Yoga Teacher Training. Now you call me nuts.
Canadian workplace culture is very similar to brazilian, specially when it comes to IT, so my life at work is pretty much the same. I absolutely LOVE my job, it’s one of those places I wake up and REALLY WANT to be there. And it’s hard to find a position where you feel like that.
About life here, I’d really like to make a video to all brazilians, about how’s life in a country where abortions and same-sex marriages don’t freak people out… It’s just…. normal. People wake up, have breakfast, take the transit, go to work. I’d also like to point out that it’s not always freezing and snowy – we had a hell of a summer this year – in Canada, and around 10C is usually great for bike rides.
I love the food, I love the weather, I love the people, the squirrels climbing the trees, the trees becoming red and naked as the winter approaches.
So poetic, eh? Let’s get the party started!
You know you’re oldschool (or, let’s face it, you have become old) when you start to miss mails arriving on your personal inbox. I’m not talking about professional e-mails, mailing lists, newsletters, the “automagically generated” content you receive.
I’m talking about content someone took some time to write, specially for you. Someone saw something, thought about you and decided to write a random line to you. Even if it’s a random lolcat. No, powerpoints don’t count – all the motivational & forwarded hoaxes are junk and people who believe this is “thinking about you” deserve to die.
E-mail is dying because of social networking, different kinds of communication, people want faster ways to reach each other, and when you mail someone this requires some time – time to think on the subject line, time to think on the content, time to arrange the ideas, time to write. When communicating over instant messaging, you skip the formalities. Social networks are useful for finding content and sharing with others – no need to formally create from scratch. It’s a big change.
The deal here, I’m old and I MISS receiving old text e-mails. I also like very old forms of communication people seem to have forgotten – I LOVE postcards and I used to be a member of postcrossing. Because of my inbox loneliness (both virtual and real), I tend to read all my junk e-mail (again, both virtual and real), so I feel more loved by my spammers. I know how automatic this content is, but someone took time to generate it. I should write a bot to mail myself some random lolz daily, to keep my inbox happy – and myself happier too.
